The Central Texas Animal Alliance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated
to bringing Austin and the surrounding communities to the place where no dog
or
cat of
reasonable
health and temperament is killed merely because he or she does not have a home
.
At the close of 2005, the Austin city pound, Town Lake Animal Center (TLAC), saw an increasing numbers of cats and dogs killed:
- 25,502 dogs and cats were taken into TLAC for the year.
- 13,619 dogs and cats were euthanized - 58% of dogs and cats taken in TLAC.
- 7,025 cats were euthanized - 72% of cats taken in TLAC.
- 6,594 dogs were euthanized - 48% of dogs taken in TLAC.
OUR GOAL IS TO STOP THE KILLING OF ADOPTABLE/TREATABLE ANIMALS AND FERAL CATS BY 2010
To meet this goal we are raising funds to bring Nathan Winograd, a no-kill expert, to Austin to devise a plan specific for this area. Mr. Winograd successfully worked with San Francisco, California (an urban area) and Thompson County, New York (a rural area) to stop the killing of adoptable animals and feral cats in those areas. To learn more about Mr. Winograd's work visit his website.
The SPCA of Greater Austin will act as an umbrella organization bringing together the area's animal welfare resources to:
- Unify communities to work together toward the betterment of animal welfare in Austin and surrounding areas
- Develop and support programs to save the lives of adoptable and homeless animals
- Educate the public in order to decrease animal intake at area shelters
- Aid in the prevention of cruelty to animals
- Create a network to provide more available care and shelter for homeless animals
- Create an alliance of city government and rescue organizations to increase adoptions.
- Reduce animal overpopulation through TNR (trap/neuter/release) of feral cats and low-cost spay/neuter programs
